RIO forges ahead with basin mine expansion

From ABC News Online...Rio forges ahead with basin mine expansion

By Paul RobinsonRio Tinto says it is still going ahead with a mine expansion in the Bowen Basin, in central Queensland, despite the global economic problems.

The company is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Kestrel Mine takeover north-east of Emerald. Rio Tinto took over the mine, then known as Gordonstone, when the previous owner closed it after lengthy industrial disputes in the late 1990s.

Simon Cupper from Rio Tinto says good management and staff has allowed expansion plans to go ahead which will save jobs.

"I think all businesses need to be careful and certainly Kestrel is a careful operation. I think we've got a lot of strength and depth here and certainly we're looking to move forward," he said."I think that when we've been given the go-ahead for this new mine that's a great symbol that that's going to happen."

A little while ago we let a few contractors go, but there are no more planned job losses."

QRC Scholarships in 2009

QRC scholarships and our scholarship students are well renowned in industy. In 2009 QRC will invest in up to 9 scholarships at UQ and QUT.

Who can apply?
You can apply if you have started an engineering degree at UQ* or QUT* in 2009 and have been accepted by UQ as a Academic Excellence Scholarship holder or by QUT, into the Deans Scholars Program.

How do you apply?
Your university will email you with the option of applying for the QRC part of the scholarship. This will happen at around March/April 2009.

What are the benifits of a QRC scholarship?
Apart from the financial aspect, a QRC scholarship is what you make it. QRC will offer you a range of networking, development, profile building and ambassadorial opportunities each year. You could have your profile in newspapers; attend QRC's Annual Lunch and meet the CEOs of our member companies; do career presentations at high schools; gain assistance in securing a vac work job or attend conferences across Australia. Check out the QRC Scholarship Student Ambassadors blogs to see what each of them get up to throughout the year.

Who is the QRC?
The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) is a not-for-profit peak industry association representing Queensland's minerals and energy sector.

The QRC works to secure an environment conducive to the long term sustainability of the minerals and energy sector in Queensland.

Jellinbah Resources 2008-09 vacation work

Jellinbah Resources, the inspiration behind the 'Confessions of a Vac Work Student: The Bubbles Incident' You Tube video, is taking vac work applications until Friday 21 November 2008.

Jellinbah has two vacation work places in mining and metallurgical engineering for the summer. http://www.jellinbah.com.au/.

Here is the info from Jellinbah:
Mining Operations (truck operations)
Preferably a mining engineering student. Their experience can be logged towards Statutory Qualifications. Working arrangements are 12 hour shifts Monday to Thursday rotating day/night on a weekly basis. Applications are open to all year levels of students.

Minerals Process Engineering
3rd or 4th year Metallurgical engineering student required. The student should be able to participate in some efficiency improvement schemes at the mine's contract Coal Preparation Plant. This is a good opportunity for a student looking for a final year project.Working arrangements – Monday to Thursday day shift, working every 3rd Friday. 12 hour shifts.

For both positions, Jellinbah will provide accommodation and transport to and from work. As the mine shuts down 20th December to 4th January, two return tickets will be supplied (Brisbane to Blackwater).

Applications due Friday 21 November 2008. Please send to Sue Olive solive@jellinbah.com.au. Applications should include details of any previous work experience (and supporting referees), academic records and extracurricular activities. (My additional advice - do some research on the company!)

If the student does not have Australian citizenship, include any details on visas enabling them to work.

Good luck!
