From ABC News Online...Rio forges ahead with basin mine expansion
By Paul RobinsonRio Tinto says it is still going ahead with a mine expansion in the Bowen Basin, in central Queensland, despite the global economic problems.
The company is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Kestrel Mine takeover north-east of Emerald. Rio Tinto took over the mine, then known as Gordonstone, when the previous owner closed it after lengthy industrial disputes in the late 1990s.
Simon Cupper from Rio Tinto says good management and staff has allowed expansion plans to go ahead which will save jobs.
"I think all businesses need to be careful and certainly Kestrel is a careful operation. I think we've got a lot of strength and depth here and certainly we're looking to move forward," he said."I think that when we've been given the go-ahead for this new mine that's a great symbol that that's going to happen."
A little while ago we let a few contractors go, but there are no more planned job losses."
